Hardwood floor recoating is the process of applying a new coat of finish on top of the existing one. This does not include any actual sanding of the floors. The stain and finish present on your floors will not be removed.
The steps needed for this procedure are buffing, vacuuming and finish application.
Buffing will remove only very superficial scratches and smudges. It also scuffs the existing finish to provide a good adherence for the new coat we will be applying. Any low/high spots will not be corrected by buffing. Deep scratches, water damage, dents or gaps will still be visible, if not accentuated after recoating. After the buffing is complete, the hardwood floors are vacuumed to prevent the contamination of the new coat with any dust or other impurities. This step will ensure a smooth and even finish.
The application of the new coat of finish is done using a T-bar applicator and a brush for cutting-in around the perimeter. Depending on the type of finish we use( water borne or oil-based polyurethane), the drying time is going to be anywhere from 2-3 hours to overnight.
Before recoating, area needs to be cleared of any furniture or appliances. These can usually be replaced the next day after recoating. We recommend holding off on the replacement of any rugs for at least a week, as the finish will dry in a few hours, but needs about a week to completely cure. Placing rugs on top of fresh finish will prevent it to cure properly, thus affecting its strength and aspect.
